New Glasgow Farmers Market Statement Regarding COVID-19

Yes, we are open for business! Here’s what we’re doing and what you should know…

As with the rest of the population, we have been watching global events unfold regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19). Given the updated information today from Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer and the Provincial Government we felt it necessary to publish the following statement on the steps we are taking at the Market.

Farmers Markets are vital outlets to our community, we depend on farmers and food producers for food and they depend on us for their livelihoods.

“Our province’s farmers’ markets are important to thousands of independent businesses that call farmers’ markets home”. Farmers’ markets represent essential economic infrastructure and the New Glasgow Farmers Market is no different. As stated in the official Farmers Markets of Nova Scotia statement today, “Farmers’ Markets should remain open where possible while exercising strict health and safety precautions”.

“Shoppers should continue to visit farmers’ markets with the intention of making economic transactions and supporting their local producers”. We will however also adhere to the best practice of social distancing which means refraining from being a social gathering place. As such, and we will be eliminating eating areas and gathering spaces. While we know this is disappointing and hard for all involved, we feel this is the best course of action. We ask that you shop (a lot) but please consider taking your food to go.

The New Glasgow Farmers Market has always adhered to all applicable Municipal, Provincial Regulations and will continue to do so. We have increased our cleaning protocol by disinfecting high contact areas on an hourly basis, increased hand washing frequency, posted proper hand washing techniques and we have asked our vendors to do the same. We have encouraged vendors to suspend sampling as well and hope that you understand and know that you can purchase with confidence.

As is everyone else, we are monitoring this rapidly evolving situation and following industry, municipal, provincial and federal guidelines.  Per guidelines set out, we ask that if customers or vendors have traveled internationally, that you please self-isolate and refrain from attending the Market or any public space for 14 days.

Until further notice, we are open for business! We thank you for your support of our vendors and we appreciate your understanding during this unprecedented time.
