Holiday Gift Guide Part 4- Stocking Stuffers

Part 4 of our Gift Guide series brings us to ak the ever puzzling question, what about the stockings??? This is one of the trickier things…there is a limit to how much underwear one can fit into a sock. So find something that is the total package…beautiful, practical, unique and budget friendly. These little gifts can still be local and not break the bank. And you can always combine them in a basket to make a beautiful main gift. There really is something for everyone at the New Glasgow Farmers Market.

I will say again, at risk of sound like a broken record,  that there is so much more that is not shown here and we have new vendors every week….so the best method of operation is come out every week!

Holiday Gift Guide Part 1 – For Her

This is a first in a series of posts that is aimed at guiding you to find just the right gift for everyone on your list.  The New Glasgow Farmers Market has something for everyone and in every budget!

Why is buying local so important?

Well it’s like this, all items at the Market are hand made, baked or grown locally, they are not imported. By purchasing from one of our talented artisans or producers, you are directly supporting a local family and by proxy, the community at large. When a producer or artisan sells their items, they have to go make, bake or grow more. By doing so, they are putting money back into the community when they buy their supplies. Whether it’s supply stores, feed stores or other local shops,  it all supports the community and promotes healthy economic growth in our County. That’s why Farmers Markets are a sustainable and very important part of the future.

The beauty of it is that you are giving a very special gift that was handcrafted with love, thought and care to give to someone special and the people on your list deserve nothing less.

Think outside of the big box!

As we begin, please keep in mind that we do have new vendors that come time to time or are new and may not be showcased here and there’s many more items than we have space to show, so that’s why it is important to come to the Market every week, you never know what hidden gem you’ll find!

‘Twas Weeks Before Christmas- A Farmer’s Market Poem

‘Twas Weeks Before Christmas”
-A Farmer’s Market Poem

‘Twas weeks before Christmas, when all through the town,
Citizens were asking, where are the best gifts around?;
The New Glasgow Farmers Market has gifts made with care,
Items are one of kind, so unique and rare;

The vendors were nestled all snug by their tables,
From jellies to jewelry to authors selling fables;
Woolen slippers from Lismore and MeMaws selling caps,
One of a kind gifts, that would not overlap.

When out of the door there arose such a tune,
With melodies so catchy you couldn’t help croon .
Away to the kitchen, the people ran to eat,
Outside they waited for the friends they would meet.

Pat’s cookies and coffee to take on the go,
“Hey, don’t forget my beer from Uncle Leo’s!”,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
A nice bottle of wine from Petite Riviere!

Lakenman’s Farm, service so friendly and quick,
You just can’t resist eating all their fresh picks.
More rapid than eagles, seasons went and they came,
So happy to see patrons, they were called by their name;

“Now, SHEILA! now, BRENDA! now, AMANDA and SHARON!
On, PAT! on PAUL! on, JOHN and KAREN!
To the back of the dome! to the front of the wall!
Now shop away! shop away! shop away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they met with an obstacle, moved around to the side,
So around the market with precise skills they flew,
Filling reusable bags with local gifts and great food.

At MacD’s Bees they found lots of honey so sweet,
Then they got free range beef at BLM Meats.
Mister Products had sauces and condiments galore,
To go with Little Dorset’s farm fresh turkey and more.

Fresh breads and pies baked by Rita and Rilda,
And a scarf for mom that was Handcrafted by Melissa.
Eat Chapel Cove Chocolate and you’ll never look back
You’ll hide it and hoard it right in your pack!

The customer’s eyes — how they twinkled! They looked so merry!
That would be Ironworks liquor made from fresh berries!
Under the weather or not feeling like you?
Be sure to ask Conny, she’ll know just what to do.

So many talented artists the market does boast,
It’ll definitely be hard to tell which you like most;
Photography by Heather or Art By Dionne,
Maybe a sketch from James Fraser, I could go on and on!.

Big Cove Foods, they have your spice,
No matter which you choose, it’s sure to taste nice!
Too many vendors to mention, there’s not enough space,
So be sure to come meet them and talk face to face.

If you’re at a loss and you can’t give more ties,
Get a Farmers Market Gift certificate, it’s just the right size!
There’s one important thing about which we are vocal,
No matter what you do, strive to always buy local!

Our volunteers they will greet you and continue to work,
You’ll always get a real smile and never a smirk!
We appreciate our shoppers, they’re such a great sight,

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!

Vendor Spotlight- Quilted Chaos, Charlotte MacCuish

Meet Charlotte MacCuish!

20150926_102629_resized
Charlotte MacCuish

Charlotte has been sewing and playing with fabric since childhood – watching her mother sew and making Barbie clothes from scraps got her started over 30 years ago!

She has gone from making clothes to completing Dalhousie University’s Costume Studies programme to quilting and even running industrial embroidery machines!  While she has another full-time job, sewing and fabric remain her true passion!

20150926_102641_resized

About four years ago, Charlotte started Quilted Chaos – the outlet for her fabric and sewing obsessions!  It’s allowed her to explore new projects and techniques like her baskets made from fabric wrapped cord.

20150926_102743_resized

“Sharing my love for fabric, colour and craft at Market is a highlight of my week!”

“Why do I like coming to be market?
The people!  Friendly & welcoming!
The food!  Fresh, local and delicious.
And the support we get from the community – makes getting up early so worth it!”

Vendor Spotlight- Le Soap & Pawsitively Yummy Dog Treats

Sarah LeBlanc started making and selling dog treats at the Farmer’s Market 3 years ago. “I sure do appreciate all the support from customers that keep coming back for homemade healthy dog treats from Pawsitively Yummy Dog Treats!!”

20150606_084720_resized                                                   20150606_084729_resized

But that’s only one side of her vendor table…

Since she loves creating so much, Sarah decided to have a go at soap-making!! Le Soap products and packaging have evolved over time. There are now 9 soap scents, 4 different creams and bath bombs!! Gift sets are also available. He soaps only use essential oils.20150606_084711_resized  20150606_084735_resized_edited-1                                  11219131_447324545429266_50037986597764997_n

Just don’t confuse the dog treats with the handmade bath and body products, the bath products don’t taste as good as they smell and the dog treats don’t smell as good when you try to wear them!

Why does she do it? To support her dog “hobby”! You may have noticed that Sarah herself has been away a bit this season (though she has some great people help her out while she’s gone).That’s because she has been travelling the world with her companions, Bo and Caper. Together, they compete in the sport of dog agility. Bo and Sarah will be representing Canada at Worlds in 2016!!

11209566_474219436076215_1730190404698445078_n

So stop on by the Market on Saturdays and say hello to Sarah!
