Pat Spaulding is not your typical East Coast acoustic musician, calling Pictou County his home, he writes most of his songs about life in the county. Over the last few years his passionate performances of his original material have been captivating many crowds at venues all across the province. Pat has appeared at the Pictou Lobster Carnival, has also been featured on East Coast rocks with Bo Presley and recently performed in the sold out performances of the Pictou County Pop Classics 60’s show.
We are lucky to have Pat join us at the New Glasgow Farmers Market on a regular basis. Pat loves playing with us as much as we love having him. He says, “From the vendors and the patrons of the market to all the wonderful smells and all the great local products, people are genuinely happy when they enter the market and I get to be a part of that.” If you haven’t has a chance to listen, grab a snack, pull up a chair and enjoy the music.

The New Glasgow Farmers Market Presents From Market to Main Street

New Glasgow, NS – The New Glasgow Farmers Market will present for the first time in Nova Scotia, a unique farm to table event, From Market to Main Street. This unique experience will take place on Provost Street in historic downtown New Glasgow and will feature a fully catered, three course meal and live music.
The New Glasgow Farmers Market has partnered with the Town of New Glasgow to host this first of its kind experience. On the night of August 27th, tables will line the centre Provost Street, a main street of downtown New Glasgow. Guests will enjoy a cocktail/tapas hour, followed by an elegant three course meal prepared by local chef Jason Conway of J Conway Catering. The meal will be prepared from ingredients sourced from local producers and vendors found at the New Glasgow Farmers Market. The purpose of this special event is to unite friends, neighbours and visitors with local farmers and producers through food, emphasizing the vital connection between rural and urban communities.
This event wouldn’t be complete without local, homegrown talent. The Market has partnered with Glasgow Square Theatre to provide the perfect musical complement to this experience. Working with their fall program, Glasgow Square is assembling a selection of amazing local talent. “When we were asked if we would like to partner with the Market on this innovative first of its kind dinner, it was a no brainer”, says Program & Events Manager Carlton Munroe.
“The Town of New Glasgow is excited to be partnering with the market on this ‘farm to table’ event. What a unique way to showcase and draw new attention to our regional market. This seems to be the trend in other parts of the country, and we are so proud and impressed with the creativity and hard work of our local market”, says Geralyn MacDonald, Community Development Director for the Town of New Glasgow.

The Dixie Rovers are a group of 7 local musicians who enjoy playing traditional Dixieland jazz. In existence for only 2 full years, they have performed at such events as the Antigonish Art Fair, Highland Games Street Fair, Olde Stumpe Frolic, and at the Antigonish Farmer’s Market.
Based in Antigonish, but with some members also hailing from Pictou County, this year the Rovers will be playing several local events including at the Pictou Lobster Carnival, Trenton Antique Car Show, and for New Glasgow’s pre-Canada Day celebrations on the riverfront on June 30. Our 7-piece group includes trumpet, clarinet, tenor sax, trombone, tuba, tenor banjo, and percussion.
Come on out and listen to some fine traditional Dixieland jazz with the Dixie Rovers! Performance begins at 9:30am.
This week we are excited to welcome yet another very talented musician to the Market!
NikiV is a singer/songwriter from Pictou County. She is a multi-instrumentalist and has been performing at various venues throughout the county for the past few years.
Her passion for performing is obvious and her energy is contagious. She has written several originals, along with performing many of the classics we all know and love. Niki lives for her music, and is grateful to come from such a supportive and caring community.
As a non-profit organization, the New Glasgow Farmers Market relies solely on table fees, membership fees, grants and funds raised to operate. Operating year round also means expenses now carry on accordingly. We also have some set up fees related to having two buildings…such as having to buy all new tables to fill the expanded space, we have a new kitchen to supply and will need new tents and more! Up until this past year, our main goal was to be year round and to have a heated facility and now that we achieved that goal, we can focus on our many new dreams and goals. Some of these are included on the site plans which have been posted but also a community garden, youth programs and so many more wonderful ideas….like anything else though it takes money to go along with all the vision and hard work.
All of this being said, we have come up with several unique experiences, all of which will help us raise funds that will not only benefit the Market, but will ultimately help us bring more positive change to our community.
Here is a list of what you can expect to see and participate in this year. We hope that not only will you share these events but that you attend them and if you have any visitors coming this summer, be sure to bring them as they will offer a true reflection of everything that is unique to our area and Nova Scotia in general. We are all about local and it’s a flavour you can’t get anywhere else!
This year, we’ve also made it easier for you and your guests from away to attend. The tickets for all of these events will be available to purchase online, not to worry though, you can still pick them up at the Market too! AUGUST 27 FROM MARKET TO MAIN STREET
You don’t want to miss this one! A very special event, in fact the first of its kind in the country as far as we can tell!
Join us for a unique farm to table dining experience located in the heart of downtown New Glasgow, Nova Scotia!
Picture a warm summer’s night, a light breeze and the smell of fresh flowers in the air. Music glides down the street as friends and neighbours come together over an elegant meal made of fresh, local foods and fine wine produced by some of the finest producers in the area.
On this night, tables will line Provost Street, a main street of New Glasgow and guests will enjoy a cocktail/tapas hour, followed by a three course meal, connecting the farmer and food producer with their community in the most literal sense. Chef Jason Conway of J Conway Catering, will create a menu consisting of ingredients sourced from local producers and vendors found at the New Glasgow Farmers Market. Entertainment will be provided by just some of the talented musicians in our area and will be announced soon.
Tickets are only $55 per person for this unique experience, vegetarian options are available.
Come out and enjoy a mouth-watering meal that pays homage to the German tradition of Oktoberfest. But in true market style, it’s all about local too! Your meal will consist of items found at the Market and will be fully catered by chef Jason Conway of J Conway Catering. You will be able to enjoy local spirits and ales while listening to the some of the best musical talents that our area has to offer.
Mainstage will be Next Exit, Leah & Kyle and Mike and the MacPhersons.

As you know, the New Glasgow Farmers Market is an incubator for small homegrown businesses. It is where new ideas are born and tested. We love and appreciate our community and we want to foster innovation and promote entrepreneurship and that begins with our kids.
Did you know we offer a table specifically for youth? We have a $15 under 15 program that allows youth to come to Market with items that they have made, baked or grown themselves at a special youth rate. Whether they are growing fruit & vegetables, making food or crafting items…we’d like to give them a start. It’s a great place for kids to learn how to conduct business and interact with their community.
In order to qualify for the $15 table rate, youth vendors must 15 years or younger and again, the products must be made, baked or grown by the students. Items for sale are subject to approval and applicable regulations, school groups and 4-H groups are also welcome to apply.

We are often approached by groups who are looking to raise funds. We can help! We have a unique opportunity that might interest you.
Our Market Kitchen is available on Market Saturdays. For a nominal fee you can rent our kitchen, create a simple menu and sell a hot meal to Market goers. This opportunity is open to restaurants, chefs as well as non-profit organizations (this includes school groups too) looking to raise funds. With 900-1100 visitors to the market every week, this is a unique way to get the word out about a new menu item at your restaurant, your catering service or to raise funds for your organization through your kitchen sales.

We have all seen the daily articles about how much your grocery bill is rising. Meat, veggies and everything else is going up. And with 80% of our nation’s food and produce imported, it is hard to avoid. All food prices are on the rise and we are all tightening the proverbial purse strings.
We hear many reasons about why people don’t shop at their Market and while the reasons are complex and varied, one we hear often is that it is too expensive. Before we start, let’s be clear, there is a place for grocery stores and to compare the two is literally comparing apples to oranges in many cases. We are not telling you not to shop at the store or to feel guilty in doing so. The grocery store can fill needs that Market can’t but your Farmers Market can also offer you things that the grocery store can’t.
So we are asking, have you really explored your local Farmers Market and really looked at what they have to offer?
We think you will be surprised. After checking the local grocery store flyers, it didn’t take long to find that prices at the Market are often comparable and sometimes even less than sale price at the grocery store. Now more than ever, you will find that Market prices are more in line with what the stores offer. For instance, you can find naturally raised lean ground beef for $5.50/lb regular price every week. No hormones, no antibiotics and raised right here, close to home.
And it’s not always about price, it is about quality. Your market can give you what the grocery store can’t, the opportunity to talk to the very person that raised your food. What practices are used to raise your meat and produce? How are the animals raised? What’s in your food, or better yet, what’s not? These are all questions that your farmer can answer directly for you at the Market. You won’t be able to get that kind of personal experience or service anywhere else.
While it is true you will not find strawberries in January or even March at the Market, you will find in season foods that did not have to travel thousands of kilometers to get to your table. You can find the in season veggies like turnip, carrots, onions, potatoes, meats and you can still find sprouts & greens that you can get at the grocery store but we can also provide you with things you won’t see, like pea shoots and later as things warm up, duck and quail eggs.
What can you do with them, how do you cook with them, what do they taste like? Again, ask your farmer or ask the Market itself. Just like the store, every market has a Manager plus we have knowledgeable vendors, so if you are looking for something in particular, just ask! We can tell you where or when you will be able to find something and if we don’t know the answer right away, we’ll try to find out and get back to you!
Staying within your budget and eating good, natural and local foods do not have to be mutually exclusive events. Eating in season is a good start!

As you may know by now, the New Glasgow Farmers Market will become a year round venue beginning January 9th, 2016. This date marks the grand opening of our Winter Market and we will expand into a summer market beginning in late May 2016. Up to now, we have accommodated more than 40 vendors but with our new venue, in the summer we can almost double this number.
The Farmers Market is an amazing platform for farms and small business alike. You are contributing to the community and making a positive impact on the local economy. It’s a great way to get additional produce from farm to table with little waste, lowering the carbon footprint and it is a fantastic venue for a small business to test the market for new products. By bringing your produce and products to the market, you are accessing a clientele of over 1000 people every week that appreciate fresh, farm raised food and locally made products and the work that goes into them.
We have have seen a major increase of interest in recent years and as such we have experienced waiting lists….but now with our expansion we are able to accommodate many new producers and vendors at the Market which will help us to achieve one of our goals which is to give our customers the ultimate shopping experience. Not to mention this is now a year round business opportunity!
This is where you come in!
We are currently looking for producers who would like to bring their products to market. You do not need to be a large registered farm to come to the Market. You could be a smaller backyard farm or avid gardener with excess produce & plants, if you have greens and veggies that you grow over winter, we definitely want you!
Here’s what we are looking for in the upcoming year:
Produce: all veggies & herbs, mushrooms and greens especially fruits of any kind
Prepared foods- food items for customers to enjoy at the market or take home with them, cheeses, european breads and gluten free items and more!
And of course, we always welcome new local artisans as well. We encourage you to attend every week but you can attend on a casual basis as well coming every couple of weeks or maybe once per month or if you are a producer of a specialty produce item, you can come when your products are in season.
