We have often been asked if we would do a Christmas/holiday dinner where guests could wear their finest formal wear and we decided this year would be a great time to do just that!

On December 1st, the Market building will be turned into a magical Winter Wonderland, so beautiful and elegant, you won’t even know it was the same place you shopped at just a few hours earlier!

As part of the Winter Wonderland experience, guests will be treated to an elegant, three course farm to table meal created with ingredients sourced from our very own vendors. Your meal will be paired with a choice of fine red or white wine from Market vendor Sainte Famille Wines.

Following the dinner, you can dance the night away with Pictou County’s own Rabbit Town Blues band. Swing and blues music will keep you dancing into the wee hours of the evening.

We’re also doing our part to make sure all of our guests get home safely with CHAD Transit. They will take you anywhere in Pictou County, it’s all a part of your ticket.

All of this and at the same time you are helping us to Raise the Barn and expand our ability to accommodate all of our vendors year round and make the Market an extra special gathering place!

We are thrilled to offer this event with the support of Select Nova Scotia and the Farmers Markets of Nova Scotia. We would also like to thank Pantry Kitchen Catering and Rocklin Parties for supporting local and helping us to make this event a magical experience!

Tickets are $85 person and the quantity of tickets is very limited. As such, tickets will go on sale online only at 9am Thursday, November 1st. Any remaining tickets will then be available at the Market on November 3rd.

Music at the Market- Jim & Kim Hadley (& friends)

We have a special musical Saturday planned for you at the Market this Saturday. We are welcoming Jim Hadley and his wife Kim. But not only that, they will be joined by some of their musically talented friends, and if you read on, you just might recognize them!

Jim Hadley is a member of the band ” Where Rivers Meet”
Beresford New Brunswick  singer-songwriter Jim Hadley has performed across Canada and in the United  States. He started his musical performances playing the harmonica at the age of  4 and was playing for audiences from that moment on. He was playing the guitar  by the age of 10 and had developed an interest in singing at the same time. It
was not long before he was performing for audiences at various events. This  included playing harmonica and singing as a guest on various Radio Shows both in the US and Canada.  His love of music spans across many genres from Rock & Roll  to Country to Swing / Big Band.  He has had the opportunity to perform to, and  delight large audiences across Canada. In addition, he has performed for  Broadway  genre productions.

Jim released his first album titled “At Last”
in October of  2008 while living in Dieppe NB.  It  includes an English and French compilation of songs he has written )
and  composed.  This album was recorded with the musical talents and
support of his  wife Kim ( vocals )  and son Scott (vocals / Drums ).

Jim currently performs with his wife Kim as the group “ Silver Sound “ at various types of venues, and also performs with the group “ Classic Country “ as one of the  lead singers  and lead / rhythm guitarists.  (source: http://www.whereriversmeet.ca/jim-hadley.html)

 

Also joining Jim and Kim are a music duo you may recognize. Nelson (aka beekeeper at Macd’s Bees and Maureen Macds Bees product developer extraordinaire) are also a very talented musical family.

They will be performing a set but also joining them are Declan Ror  and Avery Cameron for a couple of tunes.  You will be treated to an array of music genres; something for everyone to enjoy!

Music at the Market- Brady Webb

Brady Webb is from Westville, N.S. He attends Northumberland Regional High School where he participates in the school band program, Me to We, International Buddies and NSSSA (Nova Scotia Secondary School Association). He enjoys volunteering throughout his community which includes teaching swim lessons at the YMCA.

Brady started chanter lessons at age 7 and was on bagpipes by age 9. He has been a member of Clan Thompson Pipe Band and Dartmouth and District Pipe Band. Over the years, he has participated in many highland games and competitive piping competitions. Brady has earned the Piper of the Day award for numerous solo grade levels as well as has been awarded the Sandy MacLean Memorial Trophy given to a promising local piper at the New Glasgow Festival of the Tartans. Other major awards include Atlantic Canada Pipe Band Association Champion Supreme Award for solo piping Grades 5, 4, 3 and 2, overall PipeBand Champion for Grades 4, 3 and 2 and a 4th place finish at the North American Piping Championships. Brady plans on competing as a solo Grade 2 piper during summer Highland Games competitions throughout the Atlantic Provinces and Canada.

  • Due to your support of fundraising events, we are able to keep our vendor fees low lifting barriers to effective business for our vendors. We are able to develop sustainable projects and initiatives.

  • Now that most of our really big projects are done, we have turned our attention to ways we can make increasingly meaningful contributions to our community by forging partnerships with other organizations also dedicated to improving our community. Please stay tuned, we hope to have some great announcements on some exciting new programs and initiatives very soon!

Every Day is Earth Day at the Market

We missed getting this post up in time for Earth Day, but then we think Earth Day should be every day, so that makes us right on time!

We all want to be environmentally friendly, but we also know that there are challenges. We are sharing this post with you to show how the Market can play a role in your environmental goals.

DID YOU KNOW?

Recently, the NGFM made a policy to eliminate styrofoam take out containers? This is not as easy as it sounds, there are a few reasons why a vendor can’t just switch overnight. We want you to know that we are trying and so are our vendors. Our vendors take pride in what they offer you. They want you to have the best quality product but they also realize that many patrons are budget conscious. Switching to environmentally sound containers can be cost prohibitive. Compostable containers can add up to $1 or more per piece depending on material costs and shipping. While some guests can easily and happily absorb this increase, there are other patrons that may find this difficult. Then there’s the matter of finding a container that will hold up to the food that gets placed in them. Many of our vendors offer liquid or “saucy” foods and we know you would like to not have leaks. We have given our vendors some time to adjust but by the end of May you will see that most of them will have switched over to something more environmentally friendly.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

BRING YOUR OWN

You can help! Bring in your own containers, cutlery and coffee mugs from home. Keep a set in the car in one of your reusable bags in case you make an unexpected trip in. That way, you’re always prepared! Our vendors will happily fill your own reusable dishes. This will help lessen the amount of overall trash that makes its way into the landfill.

BUY RE-USABLE ITEMS

We have a number of environmentally friendly items that are available for purchase from the Market. Better yet, they are locally made, which in itself lowers your carbon footprint. More on that later.

REUSABLE BAGS

We have a number of reusable shopping bags at the Market available from various vendors at various price points They are made from durable materials and will last you a long time and they are also fashionable and attractive, making them perfect for a multitude of uses. Here are just a few examples:

PRODUCE BAGS

We are thrilled to share with you for the very first time, these amazing produce bags from Quilted Chaos. Made from a breathable poly mesh, these will hold your produce and make it easy to transport. Charlotte will have these available in two sizes, purchase in a set or on their own and reuse! Fully machine washable.

PLASTIC WRAP ALTERNATIVE

We are happy to welcome a new vendor to the Market this season! Beezy Wraps is a plastic wrap alternative. Made from cotton cloth, honey and tree resin, these wraps can be used on just about anything! If they get a little soiled, just give them a rinse under cold water and you can continue to use them. Unlike plastic wrap, when they reach the end of their long life cycle, these will completely break down.

These items are just the start! Did you know that Lismore Sheep Farm carries wool dryer balls and pillows filled with wool? Completely natural filling that will break down after its lifespan and more hygienic too. The Natural Edge has laundry alternatives and there are many natural soaps and more! There are lots of environmentally better choices to be found at the Market to help reduce waste and environmental impact.

SHOP AT THE MARKET

The single biggest thing you can do to make a positive impact on the environment is to shop at the Market. And if you are visiting somewhere else, visit their Farmers Market. SHOP LOCAL!

How does simply shopping at the Market help the environment?

Well, let us tell you!

All the products at the Market are locally grown or made. All the produce, honey, eggs, meats and lobster are grown, raised and fished locally. Items are not shipped from overseas or trucked across the country, they are grown or made right here! That means a reduction in your carbon footprint.

As you can see illustrated in the diagram I used above, there are many more steps used when purchasing a product that is not locally produced. There is more packaging, much of the food that travels is processed in one form or another to keep it fresh at the least, then there’s the increased distribution, more money spent on marketing signage etc before it reaches your table. There is increased waste created by the additional packaging, some of which cannot be recycled. And your product will be older by the time it reaches your table…in Nova Scotia, your non-locally produced food travels on average more than 4,000 km and yes, that includes the new online “farm fresh” home delivery meal programs.

When you purchase locally made products, it comes straight from the farm to Market and travels less than 100km. There is less packaging and sometimes no packaging, especially if you use one of the options available at the Market above. There is very little signage and if there is waste, most of it can be reused, recycled or composted and then that compost can be reused in the farm or your own garden. The bonus is that most of your food is picked and makes it to your table in less than 24 hrs. Many of your farmers are harvesting on Friday or even Saturday morning before market starts.

The more you can grow yourself or source from your community, the better it is environmentally and economically for the community. If you can’t get it at the Market, then buy as close to home as possible. Start at the Market, if you can’t get it there, move to products produced provincially, work your way out.

Eat seasonally when possible. Eat more of the things you can find in season instead of purchasing imported food. Preserve. Buy at the the Market in season or grow your own, then can, freeze or dehydrate. Eating seasonally and preserving are things our ancestors did before there was such a thing as national transport. Families each grew and raised what they could and then shared the bounty with the rest of the community. If they couldn’t grow or raise it, clearly they didn’t eat it.

So you see, there are many ways that you can help at the environment, just by being prepared and taking a couple of extra steps. The bonus is that when you shop local your money stays in your community, helps entrepreneurs and fosters local economic development and growth. If you don’t support your local producers, they will disappear!

This has been on our wish list for a little while and we are super happy to have been surprised with these blackboards, with many thanks to the Town of New Glasgow! These blackboards lived a life in classrooms and were reclaimed from a school. They’re now upcycled and will live on at the Market…to have fun and yes, even educate in a small way! We are really happy to re-purpose!

We have three of them throughout the Market and a re-claimed white board now located in the dome. One will have Market Messages where you can see what’s coming up at the Market and very soon, we will have a question, activity, fun fact or thought of the week, and you’ll get to leave yours too! Another fun way to participate, learn, connect and engage with your community at the Market!

NGFM 2017 in Review

We are just a few days away the from opening the Market for the 2018 winter season. We thought it was a good time to look back at where we’ve been for 2017. Being that you have shown your support for us, we figure it’s only fair that we tell you what we’ve done as a result of your support and encouragement.

We had a lot going on in 2017! Early in the year, we received a grant from the Pictou County Health Authority to put toward a community garden. We got a group of vendors together to form a community garden committee to figure out how to make the most of the funds. As we sat down to our first meeting in late May, we opened a letter informing us that we had received a generous sum of money as part of the 150 Forward Fund from the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage. This was a game changer!  We were able to come up with a more comprehensive plan and wanted to get it all done by July 1 in time for Canada’s 150th. This was a massive undertaking in a short time. This year, our committee will be looking at ways we can maintain the garden and how to keep it going. Read more about the community garden here.

We held two large fundraising events. The first was our annual dinner, this year it was Dinner By the River. We could not have anticipated its success and the event sold out in minutes! It was fantastic to sell out, but wished we could have accommodated everyone. We had such a great vision of having people dine by the river, but of course, Mother Nature did not co-operate as we were on the heels of a tropical storm and the rains came down in sheets. We quickly adapted and moved the Dinner inside. With a lot of help from our friends, we transformed the Market into an elegant space for 175 guests and musicians! Guests enjoyed an elegant 3 course meal by Pantry Kitchen Catering while listening to sweet jazz tunes by Men About Town. Later, with the help of Market supporter Mike Vinneau and the great production of Hoss Tec Sound, the dome was turned into an intimate concert venue where

 

amazing local musical talent took the stage. The Kitchen Criminals, Hot Mess and Pistol Packin’ Papas kept people dancing until the wee hours of the morning! Despite the weather, a ton of fun was had by all!  We are looking forward to this years event where we are aiming to double capacity to host a full entertainment experience at our first ever, Luau at the Market!

 

The second event was our first ever All Hallow’s Ball! We asked people to dress in their best costumes and our guests did not disappoint! We had some AH-MAZING costumes! We had Market prizes for the top 3 costumes. Guests were treated to spooktacular foods from our friends at Smokinstein who came up from Halifax to join us. We had more local music rock the house! We were joined for the first time, by Marigold and then Market supporters and always loved Mike and the MacPherson’s and the Leah and Kyle Collective were with us and all of them in great costumes!

 

The party was such a success that we’ve been convinced to do it again! So mark October 20th, 2018 on your calendars for this years event, Nightmare on Glasgow Street!

Both of these events were part of our fundraising plan. For those who aren’t familiar, the Market is a non-profit organization run by a volunteer board and full-time Market Manager and volunteers. We are home to 70 fabulous vendors who are  all entrepreneurs and small business people composed of farmers, food producers and artisans. We offer them a low-cost place to do business every Saturday. The Market relies on tables fees, fundraising and grants in order to operate. Additional fundraising includes our 2 annual gift baskets, our monthly 50/50 draw and the ATM. Two dollars of the transaction fee from the ATM comes back to the Market which directly helps the Market and it’s vendors.

While the Market operates independently and is financially solvent, we get by with help from our friends! That means vendors, customers and community partnerships. We value an important working partnership with the Town of New Glasgow and work closely with the Department of Community Economic Development who was instrumental in securing the 150 Forward Fund grant for the Community Garden this year. We are thankful for the ongoing encouragement and support that the Town of New Glasgow shows us.

We also receive support the Municipality of Pictou County in the form of a grant. This year with their help, we were able to purchase new tents to provide our outdoor vendors. We thank them for their ongoing support and important contribution.

With the proceeds from fundraising, we were also able to give the dome kitchen a makeover of sorts. New tile floors were laid and much-needed new appliances were purchased. Another special project was a portable stage and this deserves special mention. This stage was designed and built by avid Market supporter Mike Vinneau. He donated his time to build a stage that out musicians can use for our events. This is a cost saving measure and saves rental fees, making our fundraisers that much more successful. When not in use, they can be moved or reconfigured for many types of uses and events. In fact, you may remember, some of your vendors were elevated for part of the season. That’s because they were on top of this portable stage. This is something we’ll be able to use for years to come and countless events. We thank you, Mike!

We also added seating in the way of new Adirondack chairs and convertible picnic tables and benches. We will be investing in some seeds and other needed touches on the community garden in the spring as well as some other cosmetic enhancements to the dome.  All of these things we are able to do because of your support!

Also very important to the success of the Market and its operations, are our weekly volunteers. They lend a helping hand to our Market Manager and our vendors, not to mention our events and general operations. They are fun and personable and there are not really enough words to express our thanks and gratitude.

We don’t have pictures of all of them and we have many that come through our doors, but we would like to give special thanks to regular volunteers Rhonda, Christopher, Jennifer, Colin, Stacey, Maxine, Kelly-Rae, Kaleb, Mike, Pat, Noah, Colleen and the list goes on.

This year, the Market enjoyed increased traffic all season long. Our spring season saw a 60% increase in traffic, while we enjoyed a 23% increase during the peak season, on some weeks with as much as a 50% increase and overall traffic annual increase of more than 15%. That means, we had more community visitors and tourists visiting us throughout the year and growth is a good thing! We increased the number of vendors, you may have noticed that many of them join us on an occasional basis and we welcomed some new weekly vendors in 2017 as well. We are thrilled to welcome new vendors as space allows.

This year we were also thrilled to win the Leadership in Business award from the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce! This is a big deal for us! We try very hard to achieve growth and be a part of our community while working for our vendors. As an anomaly in business community, we don’t really fit in any kind of category so we were honoured to be included among so many other well deserving local businesses.  We will continue work hard and provide a great place for our community, its citizens and many entrepreneurs. 22635443_10155573743351413_382487922_n

Like many of you have done or will be doing, we will be sitting down to make our goals for 2018. We are looking forward to another fantastic year and we hope to see you every week. Don’t forget that we will be open every Saturday from 9am until 1pm from January 13th 2018 straight through until December. We will share with you all of our special dates as soon as we have them.

Leadership in Business 2017

On October 18th, the New Glasgow Farmers Market was the recipient of the 2017 Leadership in Business Award, awarded by the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce, sponsored by Mac, Mac & Mac.

As described, the Leadership in Business Award is “presented to a business that is a leader in its sector and a significant contributor to a stable local economy. This business strives to be the best in class in all that it does from employee relations and customer service to exceptional financial results.”

That’s a pretty huge compliment! Of course, I am a little passionate about our market and local and as such, I have never been accused of being short on words.  I had a speech written so that I could be sure to get across what I wanted to say on behalf of the Market and it looked short at the time but once I was up there, not so much.  In the interest of time, couldn’t quite manage to get it all out.

Below is what I wanted to say and what I had written. It’s been edited for context, but mostly I want to be clear that this is a team achievement. We are a co-operative. This is a win for us as a whole Market. An enormous amount of work and dedication goes into the Market from a whole lot of people and the Market is supported by the community. When you show up to shop, attend our events and bring your friends, you are supporting farmers, artisans, musicians and entrepreneurs.  Any local business requires local patrons to shop and support it. We are no different.

Here’s entirety of what I wanted to say on behalf of our Market:

“Thanks to the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce. We are very honoured to receive this award and to even be considered a leader in present company is very humbling.  In truth, the Market represents more than 70 individual leaders and I am thrilled to accept this award on their behalf.  The Market is a bit of an enigma, not really fitting in anywhere in particular which makes this even more special for us.  We are unique in that we offer a space for a number of farmers, food producers, artisans and local musicians to come and showcase their work that is low cost and low risk. All of our vendors have different reasons for attending, some are there to test new products and use the Market as a springboard into bigger ventures, others are there for the social aspects and to keep busy. For some the Market is a livelihood, for others a hobby and for some it’s a way to fund other endeavors.

It is the Market’s goal to join producers to the community and connect people with their food through education and awareness in a marketplace, something that has been lost in decades gone by. And while our primary focus is education and awareness, it is also to connect people personally in a world that is becoming increasingly impersonal.

We want to make a positive, lasting impact on our community and being an independent, non-profit organization run by volunteers, it’s not always easy. But as the song goes, we get by with a little help from our friends. We are lucky to have some great partners and cheerleaders in our corner. The Town of New Glasgow, the Municipality of the County of Pictou and our community who helped us to double in size over the past couple of years and this year some of our business community came together to help us install our new “Giving Garden:

As a result, we have enjoyed a 30% increase in traffic this season.  We are now able to remain open year-round, which gives increased “employment” to our vendors. We now have one full time employee and have doubled our vendor capacity.   We hold special and unique events not just to raise money for improvements and programs, but in an effort to connect Pictou County residents to each other and the broader community by highlighting all of the amazing innovation, creativity and uniqueness that this county has to offer and showcasing it to everyone we can. We offer a unique setting that is inclusive of everyone in a fun and casual atmosphere, reflective of the warmth of Maritime culture. The Market is a place where vendors and customers alike get to associate with people they may never have otherwise connected with and learn about other cultures. I often refer to it as my happy place and we strive to make it everyone’s happy place.

We are committed to supporting local agriculture, we continue to strive to make a positive contribution to local business and bettering our community.  Thanks again for this recognition and we’ll see you at the Market!”

With more than 2500 people visiting the Market each week last year, you’ll want to be sure to get your application in early! Both buildings will be open until December 16th. Table fees are $45.

Music at the Market- Pat Spaulding

Pat Spaulding is not your typical East Coast acoustic musician, calling Pictou County his home, he writes most of his songs about life in the county. Over the last few years his passionate performances of his original material have been captivating many crowds at venues all across the province. Pat has appeared at the Pictou Lobster Carnival, has also been featured on East Coast rocks with Bo Presley and recently performed in the sold out performances of the Pictou County Pop Classics 60’s show.

We are lucky to have Pat join us at the New Glasgow Farmers Market on a regular basis. Pat loves playing with us as much as we love having him.   He says, “From the vendors and the patrons of the market  to all the wonderful smells and all the great local products, people are genuinely happy when they enter the market and I get to be a part of that.” If you haven’t has a chance to listen, grab a snack, pull up a chair and enjoy the music.
